Swansea & the Cape Horners
Peter Rees will explain how, when the Cornish mines that had traditionally provided the bulk of the ore processed in Swansea could no longer satisfy the demand, the Swansea copper producers were faced with ruin. Their salvation lay in the importation to Swansea of copper ore from alternative sources around the world. Ships developed for the traditional local trade were no longer suitable for the long-distance transportation now required. Specially designed ships sailed by a new breed of sailor were developed. This is the story of possibly the most arduous and dangerous of sailing routes, and the ship designed to keep Swansea in the forefront of the copper industry.
